When October Goes by Johnny Mercer and Barry Manilow

                                                    When October Goes
by Johnny Mercer and Barry Manilow

And when October goes
the snow begins to fly
Above the smokey roofs
I watch the planes go by
The children running home
beneath a twilight sky
Oh for the fun of then when I was one of them

And when October goes
the same old dream appears
and you are in my arms to share the happy years
I turn my head away to hide the helpless tears
Oh how I hate to see October go

Oh for the fun of then when I was one of them
And when October goes
the same old dream appears
and you are in my arms to share the happy years
I turn my head away to hid the helpless tears
Oh how I hate to see October go

I should be over it now I know
It doesn't matter much how old I grow
I hate to see October go

Nancy Wilson

Thoughts 10/21/13

At this time I'm still thinking about covers and for the past five years at around this time of the year I think about doing "When October Goes" recorded by Nancy Wilson (among others). The first time I heard was probably five or possibly six years ago on Hugh Hamilton's Talk Back radio program on WBAI radio. This was not a music program yet there were people who called in to request this song. Keep in mind it was the end of October just before Halloween. Oh how things change all of those great WBAI radio personalities are gone with the only exception being Amy Goodman. Hurricane Sandy damaged the station's tower on the Empire State Building and as a result the station is fighting for its life.I would like to dedicate this song to all those brilliant WBAI talk radio personalities that we don't hear anymore........Bernard Wright, Mario Murillo, Felipe Luciano,
Samori Marksman, Playthel Benjamin, Grandpa Al Lewis and the man who introduced me to this fabulous song....Hugh Hamilton. Long live WBAI.

Thoughts 9/24/13

As this prolonged "hiatius" continues I just happened to come across Earl Klugh's Peculiar Situation CD. It's something I haven't heard in a long time. On many occasions when you hear
something you like that you haven't heard in a long time it sounds better than ever. Well this was the case with "Now and Again" I immediately decided to put this on the "to do" list. This hiatus is
happening at the worst possible time.......Keyboardist Tom Monte is involved in outside extended projects and I can't blame him.....time is money. Vocalist Evette Chaney states that she cannot sing
at this time because of voice problems. Joaquin Maria moved to Yonkers for a new 9 to 5. Miriam
Barab is extensively involved in playwrighting. Rogelio Teran is probably wondering what happened
to the rest of us. All this is happening while the group Claude Chaney and Friends has close to
30,000 views on Fandalism and had three songs (Children, I Will Be Here For You, Safiyyah) place in the top ten on Reverbnation's Soul/R&B chart for Franklin Township, New Jersey.
In spite of these somewhat adverse circumstances the dream continues. I can imagine my lovely
wife Evette singing lead on "Now and Again" and I can see Rogelio on congas and Miriam and I singing background. Everyone else I can only hope that they will return. The odds at this time say that this won't happen anytime soon, but the dream still lives and I am one who on many occasions has gone against the odds.

A Tribute to Laura Nyro ( The Night Laura Nyro was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame)

This week I listened to practically every Laura Nyro record I had and they brought back memories some good, some bad. I remember when I first discovered her through a conversation with the late Ron Townson (of the 5th Dimension) who I had the good fortune to meet in 1968 at EJ Corvette department store in Manhattan while the 5th Dimension was promoting the new album "Stoned Soul Picnic". I had just recently purchased it  and I said to Mr. Townson "I'm surprised to see that there is only one Jimmy Webb song on this album when he was so prevalent on the first two albums. I was a Jimmy Webb fan back then and I am still one today. Webb was very young, still in his early twenties when he wrote songs that eventually would become hits for Richard Harris, The Brooklyn Bridge, Isaac Hayes, Glen Campbell and Donna Summer. Ron Townson explained at the time that on the "Stoned Soul Picnic" lp they were working predominantly with a new relatively unknown young artist from here in New York........Laura Nyro .This talented young songwriter would later have her songs become hits for Blood Sweat & Tears, Barbra Streisand, Three Dog Night in addition to the 5th Dimension. She was prolific but not commercial. Practically all of her hits were recorded by someone else, yet she still had a well deserved following and recorded for the exceedingly demanding Columbia/Sony record label for many years.
Townson also said that I will be hearing more about her soon. He was absolutely right. When I went to
college I mentioned her to my late friend Shelton Ray, who to my surprise raved about her and invited me
to listen to two of her albums. Laura Nyro's highest charting single was her version of the Drifter classic
"Up On The Roof" penned by Carole King and Gerry Goffin. It only made it to #92, but what she didn't
achieve on the pop chart, she made up on the concert circuit and album sales.
One of my good friends showed me a picture of herself many years ago and I was amazed at how much
she looked like Laura Nyro, to which she responded "Who is Laura Nyro?" So I introduced her to some
of her videos and they got rave reviews from her. She couldn't believe that she wasn't aware of such a
stunningly vibrant performer.
In this video we see a modern day performer, Sara Bareilles sing one of the more popular Laura Nyro songs "Stoney End"
that went to #6 on the pop chart sung by Barbra Streisand. Of course no one can actually sound like
Laura Nyro, but this young lady does an unforgettable rendition of a Nyro classic in her own style the night
Laura Nyro was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
I can see Evette or Miriam singing this song as part of the Claude Chaney and Friends' repertoire. Enjoy.

Thoughts 7/7/13

It was a relatively quiet 4th of July weekend in the "friendly confines" of Somerset, New Jersey. On the upside online I got a chance to meet one of my favorite entertainers during my college years Harvey Averne of The Harvey Averne Dozen. We are considering doing one of the songs on his "Viva Soul" album called "You're No Good" . I was surprised to find out that we had a mutual friend Dalia Negroni Torres Rivera. Also on the upside I was happy to hear that the mother of a dear friend, Desiree Henry is steadily improving after an illness. On the downside I still haven't met with members of the band. This weekend we
were supposed to work on the story line video for "I Haven't Got Anything Better To Do" but couldn't do it because of a premature birth to the wife of one of the participants in the project. Apparently there were complications with the delivery so as a result all work was cancelled for this weekend. Prayers go out for the mother and the child. Also on the downside the aunt of another friend from my college years, Lenda Hires has taken ill. I pray for a rapid and complete recovery. This aunt is very close to Lenda.
Very soon we (Evette and I) will be headed to California and Michigan. When we return there will be
a ton of work to do for Claude Chaney and Friends.

E Com Esse Que Eu Vou  (c) 1973 P. Caetano

Com esse que eu vou sambar ate cair no chao
Com esse eu vou desabafar na multidao
Se ninguem se animar
Eu vou quebrar meu tamborim
Mais se a turma gostar vai ser pra mim

E com esse eu vou sambar ate cair no chao
E com esse que eu vou  desabafar na multidao
Se ninguem se animar
Eu vou quebrar meu tamborim
Mais se a turma gostar vai ser pra mim

Quero ver o ronca-ronca da cuica
Gente pobre, gente rica, deputado, senador
Quebra quebra eu quero ver
Uma cabrocha boa
No piano da patroa batucando
E com esse que eu vou
Mas quebra, quebra que eu quero ver
Muita cabrocha boa, no piano de patroa

E e com esse que eu vou
E e com esse que eu vou
Mas e com esse que eu vou
Sambar ate cair no chao
Com esse eu vou desabafar meu coracao
Sambar na multidao
Com esse eu vou
Desabafar meu coracao
Com esse eu vou
Desabafar na multidao
Meu coracao, eu vou
Eu vou, eu vou, eu vou
E com esse que eu vou
Eu vou
Come esse eu vou
Sambar na multidao
Desabafar

Thoughts 6/23/13

I am ecstatic to see the Claude Chaney and Friends has a collective 40,500 internet views.....
                                                17,105 - Fandalism
                                                15.537 - Reverbnation
                                                  7,858 - You Tube
and yesterday 50 people visited the CCand;F Lyric Page. It is regrettable that because of distractions
we haven't been able to take advantage of this kind of publicity. I am hoping that this situation
changes in the next week or two. The situation is the same as described in the previous "thoughts".
The only band member I have seen in the last three weeks has been my wife...and we haven't been
discussing music. We are in need of an agent.....if anyone out there has any suggestions please let
me know.
As previously mentioned only one song is ready for the next lp and that is "The Turtle Song" another
recently completed original composition called "Work To Do" is ready to be brought to the studio but nothing has happened yet.  Peace, Claude

Funny You Should Say That

Funny You Should Say That
by Dennis Lambert and Brian Potter
ABC Dunhill Music Co/Soldier Music Co.

I got up early this morning
 I guess I just couldn't sleep
All my arrangements are made, I've got appointments to keep
The chairs and tables are covered
I took our name off the door
That's what you told me to do but you can't carry it through ...anymore

Funny you should say that baby
Tell me did you read my mind
Funny you should say that baby
That's how I felt all the time

I'd like to make a confession
I haven't always been fair, no
Sometimes I think of myself before I notice you there
Well I could wait for the taxi
Tell him that I didn't call
That's what you want me to do unpack and stay here with you...after all

Funny you should say that baby
Tell me did you read my mind
Funny you should say that baby
That's how I felt all the time

Parker's Mood
                                     by Charlie Parker, King Pleasure
                                     (c) EMI Music, Atlantic Music

Come with me if you want to go to Kansas City
I'm feeling low down and blue, my heart's full of sorrow
Don't hardly know what to do
               Where will I be tomorrow?

               Going to Kansas City
               Wanna go too?
No you can't make with me
               Going to Kansas City
Sorry that I can't take you

When you see me coming raise your window high
When you see me leaving baby hang your head and cry
I'm afraid there's nothing in this squeamish dreamy town
a honky tonky, monky woman can do
               She'd only bring herself down.

So long everybody, the time has come and I must leave you
So if I don't ever see your smiling face again
Make a promise you'll remember like a Christmas day in December
that I told you all through thick and thin on up until the end, Parker's been your friend

Don't hang your head when you see, when you see those six pretty horses pulling me
Put a twenty dollar silver piece on my watch chain, look at the smile on my face
Sing a little song to let the world know I'm really free
Don't cry for me cause I'm going to Kansas City

Come with me if you want to go to Kansas City

How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)

How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)

by Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier, Edward Holland
               (c)1965 Jobete Music Co.

How sweet it is to be loved by you
               Yes it is baby
How sweet it is to be loved by you
               Ooo baby
I needed the shelter of someone's arms and there you were
I needed someone to understand my ups and downs
and there you were with sweet love and devotion
               gently touching my emotions

I want to stop, stop and thank you baby
I want to stop, stop and thank you baby
Hey now, how sweet it is to be loved by you
I tell you the truth baby
How sweet it is to be be loved by you
               Yes it is

I close my eyes at night and I wonder where would I be without you in my life
Everything was just a bore, all the thing Ive done, seems I've done them before
But you brighten up all my days with love so sweet in so many ways
I want to stop, stop and thank you baby
I want to stop, stop and thank you baby
Hey now, how sweet it is to be loved by you
Yes it is baby, how sweet it is to be loved you
Oh yes it is baby, how sweet it is to be loved by you
Well, it's like sugar and spice baby
How sweet it is to be loved by you

Stubborn Kind of Fellow

                           Stubborn Kind of Fellow
by Marvin Gaye, William Stevenson and George Gordy
                            (c)1963 Jobete Music Co

Say yeah, yeah, yeah, say yeah, yeah, yeah
  One more time now everybody
Say yeah, yeah, yeah, say yeah, yeah, yeah

I try to put my arms around you all because I want to hold you tight
But every time I reach for you baby and I try to kiss you just jump plain out of sight
Well I've got news for you, I tell you that I've made plans for two
I guess I'm just a stubborn kind of fellow got my mind made up to love you

  Oh, sing now everybody
Say, yeah, yeah, yeah, say yeah, yeah, yeah
  One more time now everybody
Say, yeah, yeah, yeah, say yeah, yeah, yeah

I'm gonna love you, gonna love you in every way
In every way, gonna love you in every way
Yes I'm gonna love you, gonna love you in every way
In every way, gonna love you in every way

With other girls I dated I waited just a moment
  With you I shall remain
Now I know you've heard about me, bad things about me
  Baby please let me explain
Well I have kissed a few, I'll tell you a few have kissed me too
I guess I'm just a stubborn kind of fellow got my mind made up to love you

  Oh, sing now everybody
Say yeah, yeah, yeah, say yeah, yeah, yeah
Ah, ah, ah, sing now everybody
Say yeah, yeah, yeah, say yeah, yeah, yeah
  Everybody sing
Say yeah, yeah, yeah, say yeah, yeah, yeah
I guess I'm just a stubborn kind of fellow got my mind made up to love you

Thoughts - June 13, 2013

With over 4,000 views "I Haven't Got Anything Better To Do" is the most successful Claude Chaney and Friends video ever on Reverbnation and the most popular CC&F video on You Tube this week. Special thanks to the musicians on this piece Tom Monte (piano), Cassa Overall (drums) and Ray Parker (bass) who are mainly responsible for the songs appeal. We could take it to another level if we had more $ to put into promotion. There will be a second Kickstarter project coming up soon.
I am happy with the response to this song so far and intend to make a new video which will be the first CC&F video with a storyline that is not a "live" performance. Stay in touch. Peace, Claude

It was Charles Darnay, a character in Charles Dickens' "A Tale Of Two Cities" , who said "It
was the worst of times and it was the best of times". That is exactly how I feel about "these" times.
Because I am an eternal optimist I choose not to focus on the bad, nevertheless there is a lot of
good that has happened that I must acknowledge. First of all the new friends that I have made this
past year who have been supportive of my endeavors as a singer and an actor....people like Prudence
Paez, Divad Sanders and legendary Savion Glover. These three have made it possible for me to
continue to play the role of Captain Barrett in the play "The Birth of Calamity Mitchell"
I am thrilled to know that there are people who have shown genuine interest in my music and
it is precisely because of them that I am inspired to create more.......Mary R. Moore, Dalia Negroni
Torres Rivera, Joy Sellman, Katy Ricci, Rebecca Webb, Desiree Henry, Carole Coughlin, Rex Burns, Ventura Leake, PJ Dustin, Elizabeth Vializ and Pedro Baez. If I left anyone out you know that it wasn't intentional and you know who you are anyway.
Through the miracle of Facebook I have been able to re-connect with old friends, some of which I haven't seen in over 35 years.....Lenda Hires, Ana Lana, Maria Velez, Thomas Tillery, Bernard Fowler  and Bruce Jackson.
Although musical tastes have dramatically changed since the seventies I am encouraged by the fact that my 22 videos are shown all around the world. I believe that CD sales will improve once I get the
exposure necessary to sell CDs. People can't buy what they don't hear in the age of Clear Channel.
I am proud of the fact that in less than a two year period we have over 15 thousand views on Fandalism and we also have comparative numbers on Reverbnation and You Tube.
At a time when two songs have entered Revernation's top 20 (You Had To Let Your Good Thing Go #10 and I Will Be Here For You #11) I am frustrated because the group is unable to make any appearances at this time because of an assortment of issues that have nothing to do with music.
I am still determined and willing to wait out the storm. In the meantime there are several places you
can listen to and buy the music of Claude Chaney & Friends.

                                          1. The Claude Chaney & Friends Facebook Page Music Store
                                          2. www.cdbaby.com
                                          3. I tunes

Thoughts: April 21, 2013

Last week I had the pleasure of visiting beautiful Red Bank, New Jersey just to ascertain the
possibility of landing a gig. One of the employees at Jamins, a popular bar/restaurant where I was told that their auditions occur during open mike, so I plan to be there ASAP.
Another possibility is Greenwich Village's "Grooves" where I had the opportunity to briefly
chat with the manager. "Grooves" is an exclusively Rhythm and Blues club. I have been to "Grooves" as a patron three times and all three times there was not only a full house but an active responsive audience. This would be an excellent place to play. The owner said that there are no auditions. He decides who plays there based on a CD. Rather than give him one of my CDs that are on sale. I decided to make a new CD that has only R&B songs. Our band usually performs different styles of music, but for this audition CD we will put together six covers and six originals and "all" Rhythm and Blues.

Claude Chaney and Friends last performed at The Underground in New York City on July
31, 2012. Since that time only three of the band members have been able to rehearse. It seems
as if all of us have issues we have to take care of in our lives. At a time when our videos are getting
attention on Fandalism, You Tube and one song "You Had To Let Your Good Thing Go" reached #10 on Reverbnation for the Franklin Township NJ area. At a time when we should be out there promoting we are not. Things are further complicated by the fact that so many of the places where we performed are either out or business or have changed live entertainment for a DJ. Gone away are
La Negrita (where we first performed in 2007), P&G Corner Cafe (under new ownership with a new name.), Saltwaters Restaurant, Manfu, etc.
Collectively for one reason or another a significant number of band members have been under the weather.  I am sorry to say that our pianist Tom Montauredes (a.k.a. Tom Monte) lost his mother.
The last time I saw Joaquin Maria was at The Underground gig but I am happy to say that
I was able to speak to him this morning. Not only is he a fantastic guitarist but he is also a
fantastic person. We were talking about new music. I suggested doing a song Leon Ware wrote
for Michael Jackson called "I Want To Be Where You Are" I love the Michael Jackson version but
I would rather do it closer to the way Jose Feliciano did it in order to let the people see what Joaquin
Maria can do when he stretches out on the acoustic guitar solo during the break. I saw Miriam and
Rogelio about two weeks ago and just like Joaquin and I they seem ready to get the ball rolling again.
As that saying about adversity goes "If it doesn't kill you it makes you stronger"
                                                                                        Peace, Claude

I Haven't Got Anything Better To Do (lyrics)

I Haven't Got Anything Better To Do
by Lee Pockriss and Paul Vance

I never loved her
She never reached me
She was just someone, someone I knew
I think about her
on alternate Thursdays, when I haven't got anything better to do

She's got a problem
If she thinks I need her
I couldn't care less now that we're through
So if I stay up and wait for her phone call
I haven't got anything better to do

Wasn't I awfully smart not to fall and break my heart

And when she kissed me, she never moved me
Nothing fantastic, thrilling or new
So if I'm crying, I'm only crying cause....

I haven't got anything better
No, I haven't got anything better
I haven't got anything better to do

Claude Chaney and Friends - I Haven't Got Anything Better To Do

It was either in the late 60s or early 70s that I heard the song "I Haven't Got Anything Better To Do" from the late Stanley Turrentine's classic Salt Sea album. I first heard it as an instrumental, so it took some getting used to the original vocal by Astrud Gilberto (of Girl From Ipanema fame). Later Dionne Warwick's sister Dee Dee recorded it. Since becoming familiar with all three versions of the song and then hearing a
new version by Natalie Cole I decided to make the song part of the "I Will Be Here For You" CD and
introduce our version at P&G Bar back in 2011.
